About

Statement

Xènia Fuentes artistic practice centers on the exploration of duality and self-representation: the encounter between the observer and the observed when both reside in the same body. Through self-portraiture and the nude, she investigates shifting boundaries of identity, intimacy, and authorship, using her body as both subject and tool to establish a silent dialogue between the one who captures and the one who is captured. In her recent work, this exploration expands into a dynamic interplay between figure, gesture, and fabric, where clothing becomes more than attire: it transforms into an expressive material whose movements generate forms, volumes, and gestures that blur the silhouette, bringing the image closer to the pictorial and sculptural. Her practice unfolds in the intimate space of the home, where natural light, shadow, and color become accomplices in composition. The face rarely appears; instead, the body becomes an anonymous form, a site of tension between revealing and concealing, between visibility and mystery. Her body and femininity take center stage, creating compositions that are at once emotionally charged, enigmatic, and sensorially immersive.

Xènia Fuentes was born in Barcelona in 1981, where she currently lives and works. She studied photography at the Institut d’Estudis Fotogràfics de Catalunya (IEFC) and holds a master’s degree in Documentary Filmmaking from the Escola Superior de Cinema i Audiovisuals de Catalunya (ESCAC). Her work has been exhibited in solo and group shows throughout Spain and across Europe, and featured in major international art fairs. Through minimal staging, rehearsal, and attentive observation, Fuentes builds a visual language where gesture, chance, and repetition shape the emergence of the image. While her earlier work explored the interplay between figure and background, she later experimented with full chromatic immersion, and in her most recent work she shifts the focus toward fabric and gesture—elements that have always been present, now brought decisively to the foreground.
